Cloves - Whole

Cloves are a pungent, warm spice, with an intense aroma and flavor. They are the fruit buds of a tree found naturally in Indonesia, and were one of the spices sought heavily in the historic "spice trade" of Europe. They play a role in sweet baked goods, as a companion to cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice in the autumn quartet that is used in pumpkin pie spices. Cloves also are heavily used in savory spice blends across many cultures. They are one of the numbered spices in Chinese "Five Spice," are essential in Indian Garam Masala, and even help flavor Vietnamese Pho. Consider whole cloves to be an essential element in any home cook's spice cupboard!
