Celery seeds come from a plant called smallage, the wild version of our familiar vegetable celery. They have a strong, slightly astringent, flavor. Their unique flavor has made them a staple in French and Italian cooking. Celery seed is also a common ingredient in pickling spices, and part of the mix in the iconic drink the Bloody Mary!
