Five Spice

Five Spice is probably the most well-known Chinese spice blend, and is an excellent shortcut for getting authetic flavor in your Chinese food without hassle. Chinese Five Spice is based on the five elements – fire, water, wood, earth and metal. A quick survey of five spice blends, show that they are most often a mix of four spices (Star Anise, Cloves, Cinnamon, and Fennel) with a wild card thrown in for the fifth! Usually that wild card is some kind of pepper. We'll happily tell you that ours is black pepper... but the proportions are a carefully guarded secret!
